WINDOW RESEARCH INSTITUTE

shikishi-mado

A type of window installed in a tea-ceremony structure. Two square windows are placed one above the other, with their center vertical stripes staggered. It is named after the layout that looks like pasting square poetry papers (Shikishi). In many cases, both upper and lower sections are called shitaji-mado, or the upper window and the lower window are called renji-mado and shitaji-mado respectively.
