hijiri-mado
Hijiri-mado are box-shaped lattice windows in early modern samurai residences or machiya townhouses in Japan. Installed at eye level, the hijiri-mado projects out from the wall or beside the entrance. Occasionally, they served to light the streets by placing paper lanterns inside the lattice.
