On Wednesday, August 24, 2022, the Window Research Institute, in collaboration with the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA), held the symposium “Above/Below/Between: Light on a Damaged Planet” at the CCA, which was also streamed online.

The symposium was organized as part of the first year of the CCA–WRI Research Fellowship Program 2022–2024. In 2022, the program focused on the manifold meanings of light and the ways in which light is mediated through architecture.

Building on this focus, the three fellows presented research projects that considered contemporary light conditions across scales, geographies, artistic practices, and legal regimes.

2022 CCA–WRI Fellows and Research Projects:

Jessica Vaughn (Temple University)
Working Skill Sets

Casper Laing Ebbensgaard (University of East Anglia)
A new building under the sun

Alina Nazmeeva (Massachusetts Institute of Technology)
Made of Sunshine: Urban Commons and Real Estate, Montréal, Canada

Following the fellows’ presentations, advisory board members Yoshiharu Tsukamoto and Gökçe Günel offered responses, followed by a discussion on how changing ecological realities call for new practices, designs, and other social and material forms of architectural intervention.

The archived video of the symposium is available on the CCA website.
