Window Exhibition to Show at The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo in Autumn 2019

27 Nov 2018

The Window Research Institute is pleased to announce the exhibition The Window (working title), which will be hosted by the showʼs co-organizers, The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo (MOMAT; Tokyo, Japan), from November 1, 2019, to February 2, 2020.

Guided by the belief that “windows represent civilization and culture”, we have been exploring the possibilities of windows from various perspectives, such as architecture, culture, and art. The window research that we have compiled to date through our Windowology program includes studies focused on the visual disciplines of painting, film, and photography.

As Japanʼs first-ever multi-genre exhibition themed on windows, The Window will showcase modern paintings by artists such as Matisse and Klee, works of cutting-edge contemporary art, and architecturally and historically themed exhibits. It will be produced under the curation of MOMAT and the technical guidance of architectural critic Taro Igarashi (General Supervisor of Windowology).

Accompanying lectures and workshops will also be conducted during the exhibition in collaboration with various specialists and architects who have been involved in Windowology. We hope everyone will look forward to our new venture to open a window onto the world of art.

After being shown at MOMAT, the exhibition will travel to the Marugame Genichiro-Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art (MIMOCA; Kagawa, Japan) in July 2020.
