Copenhagen Architecture Biennial 2025 “Lecture & Workshop: Exploring the Art of Japanese Windows Workshop”

In collaboration with the VILLUM Window Collection, architectural historian and professor Taro Igarashi will give a lecture on the history of Japanese windows, focusing on their development and significance in both traditional and modern architecture at the event held during the Copenhagen Architecture Biennale 2025.

After the lecture, the Window Research Institute will demonstrate how Japanese shoji windows made with washi paper are crafted. Here, you can observe and experience the meditative process of traditional craftsmanship and the art of making windows by hand.

Twenty participants will be selected to join the shoji workshop. Participants will be chosen by lottery on the day of the event.

Additionally, a guided tour of the special exhibition Window Behaviorology by the Tsukamoto Laboratory will be held.
This Japanese exhibition is based on research into windows and human behavior, and functions as a study exhibition. It invites you to immerse yourself in the Tsukamoto Laboratory’s research, findings, and publications from around the world, including Scandinavia.

Tsukamoto Laboratory is led by architect and professor Yoshiharu Tsukamoto, co-founder of the architecture studio Atelier Bow-Wow.
