The Window Research Institute (WRI) is delighted to present the “Shoei Yoh: A Journey of Light” Symposium. Shoei Yoh (1940–) began his creative career as an interior designer in the 1970s before transitioning into architecture. In recent years, there has been growing momentum to reevaluate this spirited architect’s pioneering work with timber construction and digital design, which was informed by his pursuit of “light as a natural phenomenon”.
In 2019, Yoh donated his archival materials to Kyushu University, where they have been compiled into the Shoei Yoh Archive. The Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) also holds a selection of Yoh’s materials, acquired following its 2013 exhibition Archaeology of the Digital. The WRI has been supporting Kyushu University and the CCA’s archival research on Yoh. The fruits of this global collaboration include a seven-part article series by Japanese and Canadian researchers, aimed at advancing international discourse on Yoh’s work. The articles can be read on the WRI website.
This symposium will be a unique opportunity for researchers and architects from Japan and Canada to delve into Yoh’s journey of light.
